Situated in the Norwegian mountains, surrounded by sweeping seasonal views, this Hafjell residence was built as part of a new development. We were commissioned to rethink the apartment’s spatial layout, optimising the floor plan while ensuring that the tranquillity of the outdoors was reflected inside.

image

The original open-plan ground floor was defined by light oak walls, with a dark mezzanine separating the private wing. We inverted this palette: by cladding the window-lined walls in black-stained oak panels, the dark winter sky was allowed to merge with the interior rather than contrast with it. The mezzanine, now finished in natural oak, reflects soft light throughout the space, creating a warm, luminous atmosphere.

Transitions are carefully orchestrated in this residence. An intimate hallway opens into a striking reveal of height and light in the main living area, unveiling a soaring five-metre ceiling. Panelled walls and ceilings accentuate the vertical volume, while a bespoke elongated fireplace highlights the horizontal line. The mezzanine serves as a recreational zone with a bird’s-eye view of the kitchen, dining area and living room.

To achieve a calm, relaxing atmosphere, we refined the architecture. The ceiling was lowered to conceal a structural beam, creating a continuous line along the ridge where each panel aligns perfectly. The kitchen was reconfigured to establish a natural flow between spaces, while ventilation and lighting were carefully integrated to minimise visual distraction.

Materials, textures and colours are inspired by context, by nature. Earthy tones echo the rugged beauty of the mountains; greens mirror the moss and pines. The interiors are wrapped in warm, durable wood, used consistently on floors, walls and ceilings – even in the bathrooms. The bedrooms are designed for rest and recharge, with wallpapered wardrobes, stone-topped bedside tables and textile headboards adding texture and depth.

Matt Gagnon’s Totem sculpture, a beaconvisible from the valley
image

At the heart of the space is American artist Matt Gagnon’s luminous totem sculpture – a beacon visible from across the valley and a defining presence in this mountain retreat.

Furniture has been sourced from around the world, selected for its comfort, craftsmanship and quiet luxury. A close collaboration with the talented craftspeople at Interiørverkstedet has been key in realising our vision for this project.
